Description

Large clusters of lightly fragrant lavender-blue flowers are produced in early spring and are held well above the deep dark green foliage. Blue Moon Phlowas selected for its clusters of large full flowers and vigor. This is an excellent choice for lightly shaded gardens or as a groundcover under deciduous trees. Provide shade during the hottest portion of the day in hot summer climates and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Easy and reliable once established. The flowers provide early spring nectar to butterflies and other pollinators.Blue Moon Phloalong with the straight species Phlodivaricata tied for the Top Performer in Mt. Cuba Center Phlofor Shade trials.

Phloare found only in North America and their normally fragrant, salverform flowers rely on butterflies for pollination. While Phlodivaricata is generally one of the more shade tolerant plants, some direct sunlight is needed for plant vigor and flowering. Here in our zone 8B garden we typically grow this species and its cultivars in deciduous shade which provides excellent winter and early spring sunlight and then by the time the trees leaf back out the plants are in filtered shade during the heat of the day which seems to be about perfect.
